Why Country-Specific Guidance Matters

The pathway to practising medicine in Australia varies significantly depending on where you obtained your primary medical qualification. Doctors from Competent Authority countries (UK, Ireland, USA, Canada, and New Zealand) follow a streamlined process without AMC examinations, while doctors from other countries typically need to complete the Standard Pathway. Your country of training also affects English language test requirements, credential verification timelines, visa eligibility, and the recognition of specialist qualifications.

Each guide below covers the specific registration pathway, exam requirements, visa options, credential verification process, and practical tips for doctors from that country or region.

Competent Authority Countries

Doctors who trained in the following countries may be eligible for the Competent Authority Pathway, which does not require AMC examinations.

Doctors from the United Kingdom

GMC-registered doctors can use the Competent Authority Pathway. Typically the fastest route to Australian registration, with no AMC exams required.

Doctors from Ireland

IMC-registered doctors qualify for the Competent Authority Pathway. Ireland-trained doctors are also exempt from English language testing.

Doctors from the United States

US-trained doctors with USMLE certification can apply via the Competent Authority Pathway. No AMC exams required for eligible applicants.
