The Short Answer

Australia does not have a blanket recognition system for overseas medical degrees. Instead, your qualifications are assessed through one of several registration pathways. The route you take depends on where you trained and whether you are a generalist or specialist.

How Recognition Works

  • Competent Authority Pathway — Doctors from the UK, Ireland, USA, Canada, and New Zealand may qualify for the Competent Authority Pathway, which recognises the equivalence of their training.
  • Standard Pathway — Doctors from other countries typically follow the Standard Pathway, which requires AMC examinations.
  • Specialist Pathway — Specialists are assessed by the relevant Australian specialist college through the Specialist Pathway.
  • EPIC Verification — All doctors must have their primary qualification verified through EPIC, regardless of which pathway they follow.
